One-time expenses after buying an aircraft

Transfer of ownership from the previous owner to the new one is handled by the LBA. Issuing new registration papers costs a one-time fee of DM 66.50 (as of June 2000).
Hangar rent at Nittenau/Bruck (EDNM) while awaiting new registration papers and looking for a hangar in the Stuttgart area (March-June 2000, at DM 272.50 per month): DM 1090.00
Cost for aircraft check-out/familiarization: DM 200.00 instructor, DM 305.00 fuel, DM 162.00 landing fees for a total of DM 667.00.

Remarks

For cost values in US$ currently (3/2000) divide amount in DM by 2.
All prices include 15% German insurance tax.
Hourly cost values are based on 50 flight hours per year.
Hull coverage amounts to 6.1% of the insured value (DM 40,000) with a deductible of DM 4,000 and with 3 pilots flying the aircraft. For only one pilot flying the aircraft this amount would be reduced to DM 2,111.40 or 5.4% of hull value per year.
Insuring the aircraft below actual hull value is not possible (e. g. for DM 20,000 to have insurance against a prop strike with resulting engine teardown). If this would be done and the insurance company got to know this fact in case of a claim, only the percentage of the insured value compared to the real value would be paid for (e. g. if the engine teardown would cost DM 20,000, the insurance company would only pay 50%, i. e. DM 10,000).
Total coverage insurance cost seems unreasonably high for the type and amount of flying likely to be done. Very likely I will insure the aircraft as summed up in no. 7, but I am still considering adding hull insurance for the first year only (until the pilots are better acquainted with the aircraft).
Required additional coverage for flights to Austria would be the sum of nos. 3 and 4 (i. e. DM 1,840), therefore Austria will be off limits. For more information on insurance requirements for flights to Austria see the respective Peschke Website.

Money put aside for engine overhaul

Currently the engine has about 600 hours, i. e. 1200 hours until TBO. If an overhaul would cost DM 20,000, this would mean a necessary saving of DM 16.67 per hour to have the money for the overhaul when its due.
